How to open an MPP file without Microsoft Project
The quickest read-only option is an online MPP viewer: choose the file, wait for it to be parsed, then inspect the tasks and timeline. You only need Microsoft Project or another editor when you must change and save the schedule.
Open an MPP file online
- Open the free MPP viewer online and drop your .mpp file in, or click to choose the file.
- Wait while the temporary upload is parsed and converted into viewable schedule data.
- Use the Gantt, task, resource, usage, network and calendar tabs to answer different project questions.

Open MPP on Windows, Mac, Linux or Chromebook
Windows
Double-clicking normally works only when Microsoft Project or another registered MPP application is installed. Without one, use the online MPP viewer or open the file from inside a compatible desktop application.
Mac
Microsoft Project does not provide a native macOS desktop application. Use a browser viewer for read-only access, a compatible Mac scheduling app for editing, or a Windows virtual machine when exact Microsoft Project behavior is required.
Linux and Chromebook
A browser viewer avoids Windows-only installation. For editing, verify that the chosen application can both import and export your MPP generation before working on the only copy.
Viewing is different from editing or converting
A viewer reads selected fields and leaves the original file unchanged. An editor creates a new saved state, while conversion maps the schedule into another format. Converting through several tools can drop custom fields, calendar exceptions, formulas or formatting, so keep an untouched backup.
What happens to an uploaded file?
The MPP file is sent over HTTPS to FormatPeek’s parser only to create the requested view. The temporary file is deleted immediately after parsing; parsed data remains in the current browser session until you close the page. This is different from tools that import a project into a persistent workspace.
