What is an MPP file?
An MPP file is a project-plan file created by Microsoft Project. Unlike a simple task list, it can keep the schedule logic that connects tasks, dates, dependencies, milestones and resources.

What does an MPP file contain?
The exact fields depend on how the plan was built. A basic MPP file may contain only tasks and dates; a detailed construction or engineering schedule can also include constraints, predecessor types and lag, baseline values, costs, custom fields and working-time calendars.
- Schedule structure: summary tasks, subtasks, WBS levels and milestones.
- Timing: start and finish dates, durations, deadlines and constraints.
- Logic: predecessor and successor relationships that drive the schedule.
- Tracking: percentage complete, actual dates and baseline information when recorded.
- Resources: people, equipment or materials assigned to tasks.
MPP compared with XML, MPX, XLSX and PDF
These formats are not interchangeable simply because they describe the same project. Renaming an extension does not convert the file.

How do you open an MPP file?
Use Microsoft Project when you need to edit and save the plan. If you only need to read it, a dedicated MPP file viewer can expose the schedule without installing Project. You can also ask the sender for a PDF when visual review is enough, or for Project XML when you need structured interchange.
Is an MPP file safe to open?
An unfamiliar project file should be treated like any other business attachment: verify the sender, keep the original unchanged and use an approved tool.
